About Us

Mary Kohnke founded Ex Libris Appraisals, LLC, in 2016 in response to a growing need for a qualified appraiser in the Midwest in the field of archives, rare books, manuscripts and other works on paper. As president and principal appraiser, she brings to the firm nearly a decade of rare book appraisal experience and a reputation for integrity and professionalism.

​Ms. Kohnke received her Bachelor of Arts in Classics from Valparaiso University and a Master of Arts with a concentration in Byzantine manuscript studies at the University of Notre Dame. She worked with museums and special collections throughout her undergraduate and graduate career, becoming familiar with curatorial techniques and bibliographic formatting. Upon graduation, Ms. Kohnke moved to Chicago to accept the role of Director of Rare Books and Manuscripts at Leslie Hindman Auctioneers. She remained at the prestigious auction house for eight years as Senior Specialist of Rare Books and Manuscripts where she handled such diverse material as incunabula, modern first editions, Audubon prints and Elvis Presley memorabilia, and brought a number of significant collections to the block.

Later, as Director of Consignments, Ms. Kohnke managed an impressive team of specialists and account executives in all departments, including Post War and Contemporary Art, American and European Art, Fine Prints, Modern Design, Asian Art, Fine Furniture and Decorative Arts and Vintage Couture.  She has appeared as an expert in national news sources and on television, including the Emmy award winning sports appraisal show, A Piece of the Game.
